Story 10: Shupatto Compact M Solid Collection - design shaped by everyday life

A partnership built on consideration

For Story 10 of our 25-year series, we turn to Shupatto - a brand whose work begins with a close, generous look at everyday life.

Since 2024, Shupatto has been a valued DMI partner, united by a shared belief that thoughtful design is felt in the details: in the way an object works, the way it lasts, and the way it quietly makes a day easier.

This is a story about craftsmanship shaped by listening, and about a simple bag that has become a meaningful expression of care.

The idea of a "design-bag"

Shupatto describes its approach as a "design-bag": a bag shaped by consideration of human activities, sentiments, and lifestyles. It begins not with a trend, but with attention - listening carefully to what users say, and to the unspoken frustrations that often sit just beneath their words.

The questions were wonderfully ordinary. Folding a bag could feel like a bother. Some bags did not return neatly to shape. Pouches were easy to lose. Rather than dismiss these small inconveniences, Shupatto treated them as invitations to rethink what a bag could be.

A thoughtful beginning

The first idea was inspired by the pleats of non-woven work caps. From there came handmade prototypes, followed by repeated testing, adjusting, and refinement - a patient process of asking what could be made simpler, stronger, and more intuitive.

That process is central to Shupatto's character. Each intention brought the design closer to the feeling it was meant to create: a bag that responds naturally to the rhythm of real life without asking for unnecessary effort in return.

Compact M, in a new solid palette

The compact M brings Shupatto's thinking into a generous size, now expressed in seven new solid colours: Peony Petal, Evergreen, Foggy Lake, Brick Brown, Clear Sky, Jet Black and Cashew Nuts.

Expanded, it measures 35 x 30 cm and offers 1.5 L of volume with a 5 kg capacity - enough for the things that accompany a day, from the practical to the personal. When the day is done, it folds down to just 6 x 8 cm in a few motions of its own, without the need for a pouch.

The pleats are made to endure, retaining their durability after 100 washes. It is a quiet piece of engineering: compact when you need it to be, capable when you do not, and built with intention.

The pleasure of less effort

There is no elaborate ritual to remember, no separate pouch to misplace - just a few natural motions and the bag is ready to rest until it is needed again.

A design that keeps becoming

Shupatto does not feel like a brand that considers its work finished. Its designs continue to evolve through observations, conversation, and the humility to revisit what might already seem resolved.

That openness keeps the work grounded in the lives it is made to accompany. Shupatto aims to bring a small measure of comfort and joy to cheerful days, hectic days, and the ordinary days in between - the days that make up most of a life.

What continues to guide the work

Listening - noticing both expressed needs and quiet frustrations.

Craftsmanship - testing patiently until an idea feels truly resolved.

Everyday joy - making useful things that bring ease without demanding attention.

Part of the larger journey

Shupatto belongs to the DMI 25-year story not simply as a partner, but as a reflection of what we value in partnership: care in the process, respect for the people who will use the final piece, and the belief that thoughtful design can make a meaningful difference in the everyday.

We are grateful to have Shupatto alongside us since 2024, and to share a story shaped by such quiet confidence, patient refinement, and genuine consideration.
