Flensted — handmade in Denmark since 1953
As we continue our 25-year anniversary series, we turn to Flensted, a brand that joined DMI in 2014 and has remained a considered part of our collection ever since.
Founded in Denmark in 1953, Flensted began with a single mobile created by Christian and Grethe Flensted for their daughter’s christening. From that first piece, a legacy of craftsmanship, movement and playfulness took root — one that has now been passed through three generations of the family.
More than 200 designs later, every mobile is still handmade in Denmark, carrying forward the same values of quality, balance and quiet delight. Each generation has brought its own voice to the brand, yet the spirit remains constant: thoughtful, light-filled and deeply connected to the beauty of simple form.
For Week 4, we have chosen Drifting Clouds, designed by Ole Flensted in 2016, as the focal point of the story. With its natural tones, golden accents and simplified cloud forms, the piece captures the essence of Scandinavian design in a way that feels both gentle and distinctive.
What makes Drifting Clouds especially compelling is its restraint. The leaf-like forms, cut from plywood and softened by warm natural finishes, give the mobile a pared-back elegance that feels deeply Flensted. It is a piece that invites the eye to follow its movement, while also encouraging the mind to wander.
That sense of movement is central to Flensted’s world. As the brand describes it, movement is not only about physics — it is about imagination. It is about letting thoughts drift, making room for the unexpected, and creating objects that move not only in the home, but within us. Drifting Clouds reflects that beautifully: a quiet, playful expression of motion that feels light, poetic and full of possibility.
It also evokes a very simple kind of memory — the feeling of lying in a field of grass on a warm summer day, watching clouds drift slowly across the sky. There is something universal in that image, and something especially Scandinavian in the way it is translated here: understated, natural and full of calm energy.
For us, Flensted is a reminder that great design does not need to be loud to leave an impression. Through movement, lightness and a quiet sense of play, the brand captures something deeply human — the way imagination can shift a room, and even the way we feel within it.
