Story 7: Skandinavisk Hygge - A Story of Scent and Place

Story 7: Skandinavisk Hygge - A Story of Scent and Place

Celebrating 25 Years of Introducing International Design to Australia & New Zealand

Skandinavisk joined DMI in 2019, bringing with it a collection that connects scent, Scandinavia and sustainability in a beautifully intentional way. Founded in Copenhagen in 2012 by Shaun an Gerry, the brand was shaped by a shared fascination with Nordic landscapes, language and the everyday rituals that give a place its character. From the beginning, Skandinavisk set out to translate those impressions into products for body and home that feel refined, atmospheric and quietly distinctive.

Among its most recognisable fragrances is Hygge, a scent that captures one of Denmark's most cherished ideas. Hygge has no direct translation, yet its meaning is instantly felt: cosiness, comfort, balance and the pleasure of life's small, meaningful moments. It is an expression of living well - not through excess, but through warmth, ease and appreciation for the ordinary made special. That spirit is reflected in the fragrances itself with remarkable subtlety: black tea and mint leaves, dried apples and a dusting of baked cinnamon create a scent that feels inviting, gently spiced and softly familiar. Rather than dominating a space, it settles into it, bringing a sense of warmth that feels calm and lived in.

Hygge Scent Notes

The Hygge collection extends across scent diffusers, candles, home mist, hand cream and body wash, allowing the fragrance to move through different parts of the day and the home. Each format carries the same sense of restraint and care, giving the collection a coherence that feels both practical and elevated. It is fragrance designed not just to be used, but to be experienced as part of daily rhythm.

Skandinavisk's broader identity is rooted in more than scent alone. Its work draws on over twenty years of travel across Scandinavia and the Nordic region, blending ingredients, materials, colours, symbols and local words to create unique impressions of place. That layered approach gives the brand a sense of depth: each fragrance feels connected to something real, yet open enough to be interpreted in a personal way.

Skandinavisk adds a different kind of presence to the DMI collection - one that is felt through atmosphere as much as it is seen in the beauty of the collection itself. In true Scandinavian design, the aesthetics is quietly compelling: refined, balanced and deeply thoughtful. With Hygge, the brand brings scent, memory and mood into the everyday in away that feels subtle, intimate and lasting. As part of the 25-year journey, it is a reminder that thoughtful design can shape a space not only through what we see, but through the feeling it leaves behind.
